Cox and Stringer dominate in sweep over Pittsburg State

TOPEKA, Kan. – Marissa Cox and Corrinne Stringer each reached double figures in kills as 11th-ranked Washburn swept Pittsburg State, 25-16, 25-23, 25-17 Friday night at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.
 
Washburn improved to 27-4 overall and 12-1 in the MIAA. The Ichabods will host Central Oklahoma Saturday at 6 p.m. and the five seniors will be honored prior to the match.
 
Cox hit .464 with 15 kills and two errors in 28 attempts. She scored six of Washburn's final seven points in a close second set. Stringer hit .379 with 12 kills and an error in 29 swings. Washburn had 10 blocks with Hannah Frierdich getting a hand up on four of them. Stringer, Sarah Vicory and Abby Wittman each had three blocks.
 
Wittman added 37 assists and a pair of kills. Kelsey Lewis led the back row with 14 digs.
 
Washburn hit .231 while the Gorillas hit .138 in the match. Pitt State hit .000 in the first match but bounced back to hit .390 in the second set. Washburn trailed most of the second set but managed 12 ties before finally leading at 20-19 on Cox's second straight kill. She made it three straight to end a 4-0 run that gave Washburn a 21-19 lead. The Gorillas later tied the match at 22-22 but a kill from Cox got it to set point. After one more PSU point, Cox ended the set with a kill.
 
Washburn never trailed in the third set and a rotation error at the end of the game gave Washburn what would have been the Gorillas' 18th point to end the match.
 
Madison Mosier led the Gorillas with 11 kills as the only player in double figures.
