TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team was swept in a pair of games Thursday to Emporia State falling 5-1 and 9-4. Washburn will have a quick turnaround as they will host Lincoln starting at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Washburn Softball Complex.
In the opener, Washburn (6-16, 2-6 MIAA) fell behind early as the Hornets scored three in their first at bat and added one more in the second inning jumping out to the 4-0 lead. Washburn scored a solo run in the bottom of the third when
Deidra Jones drew a bases-loaded walk scoring
Katie Schroeder. Washburn worked the bases full in the inning with no outs, but a line out double play. The Lady Blues left the bases loaded in the frame. The Hornets added one more in the fourth leading to the 5-1 win.
Alex Zordel had two hits in the opener for Washburn.
Amanda Kirkhart recorded 17 putouts at first base and
Lauren Thimmesch took the loss in the circle.
In the nightcap, Washburn took a 1-0 lead as Zordel's sac fly to center scored Schroder from third. The Hornets (19-8, 6-2 MIAA) scored three runs in the second inning and added two more in the third taking a 5-1 lead. Washburn came back with three runs in the bottom of the third when a bases-clearning double down the left field line by Jones scored Thimmesch,
Shelby Erickson and Kirkhart cutting the ESU lead to 5-4. However the Hornets scored three more in their next at bat and another run in the sixth taking the 9-4 win wrapping up their 29th-straight win over the Lady Blues.
Kirkhart, Zordel and Jones each had two hits to lead Washburn in the game. Washburn stranded nine base runners in the second game.
Marina Quimby took the loss striking out one in the game.
