Washburn swept by Rockhurst in non-conference twinbill

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team was swept in a non-conference double dip at Rockhurst on Wednesday as the fell 10-1 in six innings in the opener and then 9-4 in the nightcap. Washburn will return to MIAA play as they will host Missouri Southern on Friday and Pittsburg State on Saturday at the Washburn Softball Complex.

In the opener, Washburn (7-19) trailed 1-0 after the Hawks (16-9) scored in their first at bat, but an RBI single by Skyler Gentry scoring Lauren Thimmesch. The score would remain tied until the the bottom of the fifth when the Hawks would take advantage of a Washburn error to score three unearned runs. Rockhurst wrapped up the game in the bottom of the sixth as they scored three more unearned runs on another Washburn error and six overall in the frame for the 10-1 win. Haylee Marsteller and Gentry had two of Washburn's six hits in the game as the Lady Blues left seven runners on base in the game. The Hawks had 13 hits in the game. Thimmesch struck out two in the game allowing four earned runs.

Washburn scored an unearned run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Thimmesch scoring Alex Zordel who singled in the inning. However Rockhurst would score three in the first on a three-run homer and then four more in the second to jump out to a 7-1 lead. Washburn got one run back in the top of the third on a single up the middle by Zordel scoring Katie Schroeder who led off the inning with a single. The Hawks added two more in the bottom of the fourth. Washburn scored twice in the seventh after Amanda Kirkhart doubled and then scored on a double by Schroeder, who later scored on a sac fly by Zordel. Washburn finished with seven hits in the game compared to nine by Rockhurst. Quimby took the loss walking eight and striking out one.

Marsteller finished with three hits in the doubleheader while Genrty, Schroeder and Zordel each had two. Zordel finished with two RBI. Schroeder scored a pair of runs in the series.
