Marissa Cox and
Leanna Willer reached double figures in kills as Washburn swept Emporia State 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 Tuesday night to open the MIAA season.
The 11th-ranked Ichabods (7-2) will return to non-conference action with four matches this weekend at the Arkansas-Fort Smith Invitational.
The third set was tied 11 times, the last at 21-21 after a 4-0 Hornet run.
Sarah Vicory set down a kill that started a 3-0 run for Washburn to get to match point. After an ESU kill,
Marissa Cox got her second straight and 11th of the night to end the match.
Cox hit .409 with two errors in 22 attempts. Willer had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Washburn blocked six shots with
Hannah Frierdich getting a hand on five of them.
Kelsey Lewis led the Washburn defense with 24 digs and
Abby Wittman had 38 assists.
Washburn led 7-3 and 10-5 in the first set but Emporia State fought back and was within a point at 22-21. Willer, Cox and Corrine Stringer each had consecutive kills to end that set.
A 5-0 run midway through the second set put Washburn up 17-12 but the Hornets got within one point two more times before Cox and Willer got the Ichabods' final two kills of the set to close it.
But teams struggled on the attack. Washburn hit .176 and ESU hit .129 as a team. Both teams hit .089 in the second set but Washburn rebounded with a .303 attack in the final set.
No Hornet reached double figures in kills. Carly Spicer had nine kills while Katie Deutschmann and Courtney Haring each had eight and hit over .350 in the match. The Hornets blocked 12 Washburn attacks.
