Two sets go to extra points as Bods win 3-0 battle at Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. – Four Ichabods had double-figure kill matches as it took them extra points in the first and third sets to win 29-27, 25-18, 31-29 Tuesday night at Emporia State.
 
The Ichabods improved to 20-4 and 12-4 in the MIAA as they played their third of five straight road matches. They'll play Friday at 6 p.m. at Central Oklahoma and then Saturday at 2 p.m. at Missouri Southern to wrap up the final road trip of the year.
 
Marissa Cox led the Ichabods with 16 kills and Leanna Willer added 14. Sarah Vicory and Korie Thompson added 10 apiece as Washburn beat the Hornets in kills, 58-44. Natalie Bates had 46 assists for the Bods and 11 digs and Alyssa Carney led the back row with 19 digs.
 
The match featured 37 ties and 17 lead changes. Washburn faced set point in the third set at 29-28 before scoring three straight to win the match. Sarah Vicory tied the set at 29 and then an ESU error got the Bods to their fourth match point of the night. Leanna Willer then closed it out with a kill.
 
Washburn also faced set point down 26-25 in the first set but the Bods fought it off and then later won the set on a kill from Liz Powell and an ace from Thompson.
 
After a slow start in the second set the Ichabods won eight of nine straight points to go up 17-11. The Hornets later used a 3-0 run to cut Washburn's lead to 21-16 but the Bods scored four of the final six points to win the set and take a 2-0 lead.
 
Washburn built an 11-5 lead in the third set but the Hornets scored eight of the next 12 points to pull within two and then they were able to take the lead later at 20-19 after a 5-0 run. The set was tied nine more times after that and there were seven set points before Washburn was able to finally pull away.
 
Washburn hit .268 while the Hornets (11-10, 7-9 MIAA) hit .208 as a team. The Hornets led in blocks, 12-7 but Washburn led in digs, 56-49.
