Willer and Cox light it up in 3-1 win over Central Oklahoma

TOPEKA, Kan. – Leanna Willer had a double-double and Marissa Cox hit .424 in a 3-1 win Friday night over Central Oklahoma at Schendel Court in Lee Arena. No. 7 Washburn took the match 25-15, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23 to improve to 14-1 and 6-1 in the league. The Bronchos had an identical record to Washburn before the match and fell to 13-2 and 5-2 in the league.

The win broke up at least part of a five-way tie for first in the league and Washburn will keep at least a share of that lead going into Saturday. The Ichabods will finish a four-match home stand Saturday at 6 p.m. when they host Missouri Southern.

Willer led the team with 23 kills and 20 digs and Cox had 16 kills with just two errors in 33 attempts. She also had six digs and two blocks. Sarah Vicory added 11 kills and four blocks. Alyssa Carney tied Willer with 20 digs and she had four aces. Korie Thompson had 14 digs and Natalie Bates had a double-double with 45 assists and 10 digs.

Washburn trailed 23-22 in the fourth set as the Bronchos looked to even the match and force a fifth set. Willer then set down a kill to tie the set and then two straight UCO attack errors gave the Bods the win.

Washburn hit .200 in the match after just a .024 effort in the third set. The Bronchos hit .295 that set and led nearly the entire way to get their lone set win. They opened up with a 4-0 lead and later led 9-5 before the Ichabods scored four straight to tie the set. UCO held a slight lead after a 3-0 run and then later used a 4-0 run to go up 21-16. Washburn scored just two more points in the set after that.

The Ichabods opened up strong with a .382 attack percentage in the first set while UCO hit .059 as a team. The second set was much closer with 10 ties, the last coming at 20-20. Washburn scored three straight after that and then got to set point on a kill from Willer. A kill from Cox later closed the set and gave Washburn a 2-0 lead.

Central Oklahoma got a strong performance from Barbara Jackson as she had 20 kills and seven digs. She was the only Broncho in double figures.
