Ichabods solid in dominating sweep over Missouri Southern

TOPEKA, Kan. – Korie Thompson had a double-double and hit over .500 as seventh-ranked Washburn swept Missouri Southern, 25-20, 25-14, 25-10 Saturday night at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.
 
The Ichabods finished their four-match home stand and improved to 15-1 overall and remained tied for first in the MIAA at 7-1. They will return to the road Friday at 7 p.m. at Pittsburg State.
 
Thompson had 12 kills and 10 digs and she hit .524, a new career high attack percentage. She had just one error in 21 attempts. Leanna Willer tied Thompson for the team lead with 12 kills and Alyssa Carney tied her as the defensive leader with 10 digs. Mattie-Ann Swenson led Washburn above the net with three blocks and three different players had two.
 
A kill from Thompson early in the first set started a 5-0 run that gave the Bods a 12-5 lead. They never let the Lions (4-12, 1-7 MIAA) any closer than five down after that. A sneak kill from setter Natalie Bates got the Ichabods to set point and then Thompson later ended it with a kill.
 
The Ichabods hit .484 as a team in the second set and scored nine of the final 14 points to run away with a win. They hit .333 in the final set and gave up just six MSSU points after the Lions took an early 4-3 lead. They had runs of 5-0 and 6-0 to pull away. Paige Reigner had three kills in Washburn's final five points to get on the score sheet.
 
The Ichabods hit .361 in the match while the Lions had a .082 attack percentage. Katie Politte and Krishna Merriman had eight kills to lead their team.
 
Bates had 39 assists for Washburn and she contributed three kills and three digs.
