SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team fell 77-70 to No. 14-ranked Minnesota State on Saturday. Washburn will return to the court on Monday night in its home opener when Southwestern (Kan.) comes to Lee Arena for a 7 p.m. tip.
The Ichabods were led by
Stephon Drane who recorded 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field adding five rebounds.
Prince Samuels scored 12 off the bench.
The Ichabods led by as many as 10 points early in the second half with 17:15 remaining after a lay up by
Algie Key, but the Mavericks would go on a 21-7 run hitting 4 of 5 3-pointers during the 6:13 stretch to take a 54-48 lead with 12:32 to play.Â
Washburn cut the lead to two points twice before pulling out to a six-point lead but the Ichabods would not get closer than five the rest of the way before the Mavericks took the 77-70 win.
Washburn led 37-31 at the break after shooting 12 of 31 from the field while holding the Mavericks to 8 of 22. However in the second half the Mavericks improved to 12 of 23 shooting going 6 of 10 from 3-point range. Washburn finished 42 percent from the field in the game hitting 25 of 59 shots while the Mavericks finished 20 of 45 overall for a 44 percent clip.
Washburn committed 19 turnovers in the game leading to 18 points for the Mavericks. Washburn had 16 offensive rebounds gaining 19 second chance points in the contest. Overall the Ichabods led the Mavericks in rebounding 40 to 23.
