Shorthanded Ichabods drop heartbreaker at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods dropped a 48-47 decision at Rockhurst on Saturday to the Hawks. The Ichabods will return to play on Monday at 7:30 p.m. when they will face Tabor.

With the Ichabods and the Hawks tied at 44, Washburn (4-7) came up short on three possessions and a jumper by the Hawks Russell Burns gave Rockhurst (4-4) a 46-44 lead with 29 seconds to play. Washburn missed on its next possession and the Hawks' Josh Roberts hit a pair of free throws putting Rockhurst up 48-44. Kyle Wiggins hit a 3-pointer with three seconds to play cutting the lead to one but the Hawks finished out the clock taking the one point win.

The Hawks led by as many as 10 in the first half before the  Ichabods finished the stanza on an 8-1 run holding Rockhurst without a field goal for the final 7:06 of the half. All of the points by the Ichabods in the first half came from three players as Alex North and Kyle Wiggins each had nine and Turon Parker recorded seven. 

North led the Ichabods with a game-high 17 points adding eight rebounds. Kyle Wiggins had 12 points and Parker finished with 11. Rockhurst had no players reach double figures as three different players had eight.

The Ichabods finished 19 of 53 from the field hitting 4 of 14 3-point attempts while the Hawks started the game 4 of 7 from 3-point range but finished 7 of 23 overall from deep. The Hawks were 17 of 52 from the field overall and finished 7 of 10 from the free throw line. The Ichabods were 5 of 12 from the charity stripe going 1 of 4 in the second half.

The Ichabods' 47 points scored ws the second-fewest scored by an Ichabod in a loss topping only the 45 points scored against Truman on Jan. 13, 2007. The 48 points scored by Rockhurst were the fewest points allowed in a loss topping the 50 scored by Northwest Missouri on March 8, 2008 and the 95 combined points were the fewest in a game in school history.
