Duvall scores, rebounds and dishes as Bods win MIAA opener and stay unbeaten

TOPEKA, Kan. – Honor Duvall tied career highs with 22 points and five assists and just missed a double-double as seventh-ranked Washburn beat Southwest Baptist 80-64 Thursday night at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.

The Ichabods improved to 7-0 and 1-0 in the MIAA while the Bearcats fell to 3-3 and 0-1. Washburn will stay at home and host Missouri Southern Saturday at 5 p.m.

Duvall was 10 of 14 from the field and she made both free throw attempts for 22 points. That matched the 22 she scored in the season opener this year at Puerto Rico-Bayamon. She tied her career high with five assists and added nine rebounds, brining her one short of her first double-double.

Duvall made seven of Washburn's first 12 points as the Bods raced to a 12-0 lead and kept the Bearcats out of the game from the start. Duvall scored eight of Washburn's first 10 points to start the second half and the Bods built a game-high 30-point lead eight minutes into that period.

The Bearcats out-scored Washburn in the second half and were able to cut that lead to 16, but not until the final 2:30 of the game.

Washburn shot at or above 50 percent for the third straight game with a 51 percent effort. The Bods shot 84 percent (16 of 19) from the free throw line and won the rebound battle, 42-28. SBU shot 38 percent from the field and made 7 of 10 free throws.

Duvall was one of four Ichabods to score in double figures. Casyn Buchman had 13 points as she made all six free throws. She also added five assists to tie Duvall for the team high. Taylor Ignoto reached double figures for the seventh time in as many games this year with 10. She was 3 of 6 from the field and hit a pair of 3-pointers. Erika Lane came off the bench to score 10 points and reach double figures for the second straight game.

Jayna Smith had seven rebounds off the bench and Felisha Gibbs blocked two shots.
