Box Score TOPEKA, Kan. – Saturday's game between unbeaten Washburn and Missouri Southern featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties. The Lions were on top after the final change and held on for a 66-62 win over the seventh-ranked Ichabods at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.
Washburn fell to 7-1 and 1-1 in the MIAA while the Lions improved to 8-0 and 2-0. The Ichabods will take seven days off and then host a non-conference game December 15 against Southwestern.
Erika Lane scored in double figures off the bench for the third straight time and led the Ichabods with 17 points. She was 7 of 9 from the field and made three of her four 3-point attempts.
Casyn Buchman went 6 of 14 from the field for 14 points while
Taylor Ignoto had 11 and
Honor Duvall had 10.
Duvall had her first career double-double with a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the team. She also had four assists to tie for team-high honors.
The Ichabods won the rebound battle, 35-30 and had just eight turnovers. Their free throw shooting is what made the difference. The Ichabods shot just 6 of 17 (35 percent) from the free throw line while the Lions made 19 of 25 from the line.
Each team led by as much as seven at some point in the game. The Lionds were up by that margin two minutes into the second half and Washburn was up by seven, 57-50 with 5:22 remaining in the game. The Lions erased that lead with a 12-0 run to go up 62-57 before Lane and Buchman tied the game at 62 with a pair of baskets.
Lane hit a jumper and then Duvall's defensive rebound set up a 3-pointer from Buchman with 53 seconds remaining to tie the game at 62.
The Lions later forced a Washburn turnover and hit two free throws to go up 64-62 with 25 seconds left. The Bods missed a shot on the following possession and then MSSU raced down the court and put the game away with a layup in the final second.
Washburn shot 44 percent while Missouri Southern shot 47 percent. The Bods made 6 of 16 3-pointers while MSSU made 7 of 12.
Jenson Maydew scored 14 points and had eight rebounds off the bench to lead the Lions. Jordan Dinyer and Sharese Jones each had 11.
