Ichabod softball squad swept by #9 Hornets

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team was swept by the No. 9-ranked Emporia State Hornets falling 9-3 and 4-0 on Friday night. The same two teams will play a non-conference twinbill starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Washburn Softball Complex.
 
Game 1 – Emporia State 9, Washburn 3
The No. 9-ranked Hornets (28-7, 10-0 MIAA) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but the Ichabods (15-13, 7-6 MIAA) came back with three runs in top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. After Katie Schroeder led off the inning with a double, she moved to second on a single by Samantha Carson. Lauren Thimmesch drove in one and then Deidra Jones drove in another with a ground out and then Shelby Erickson had an RBI single putting Washburn up 3-1. The Hornets came back and tied the score at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Neither team would score until the Hornets scored five unearned runs taking advantage of an Ichabod error opening the flood gates for ESU. The Ichabods were held scoreless in the seventh as ESU picked up the win. Schroeder and Carson each had two hits combining for four of the Ichabods' seven hits. Thimmesch (7-3) took the loss in the circle as only one of her six runs allowed were earned.

Game 2 – Emporia State 4, Washburn 0
The Ichabods were shutout for the first time this season in the 4-0 loss to the Hornets. The Ichabods were also held to a season-low two hits in the loss. The Hornets scored all of their runs in the third inning breaking a scoreless tie. The Hornets scored all four runs on four hits in the frame leading to the win. Washburn's two hits came on a single by Schroeder and a triple by Haylee Marsteller. Carson (6-2) took the loss scattering eight hits with one strikeout.
