Bods hang on in all three sets to sweep No. 16 Jennies

The Ichabods won three tight sets to sweep 16th-ranked Central Missouri 25-22, 27-25, 25-22 Saturday afternoon at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.

No. 8 Washburn (13-1, 5-1 MIAA) will continue a four-match home stand Friday at 6 p.m. against Central Oklahoma.

Korie Thompson had a kill late in the third set and then Alyssa Carney served an ace to give Washburn a 23-19 lead. The Jennies (8-6, 5-1) scored three straight points after that to get within a point at 23-22. Sarah Vicory then took over with a kill to get to match point and then her fourth block of the set, a solo stuff that gave Washburn its first sweep over the Jennies since 2008.

Vicory ended the match with seven kills. Leanna Willer led the team once again with 15 and she had a double-double with 17 digs. Marissa Cox had nine kills and Carly Swan hit .545 with six kills and no errors in 11 swings. She led the team with five blocks.

Carney led the back row with 22 digs and Natalie Bates had 11. She added 33 assists for a double-double.

Washburn hit .273 in the first set and led the entire way after a 2-1 UCM start.  The Bods scored 7 of 8 straight points to go up 8-3. The Jennies got within two seven different times after that but never closer in the set.

The Ichabods fell behind 6-3 in the second set then scored four straight to go on top.  They later scored three straight to get to 20 first and then got to set point at 24-23 on a UCM service error. The Jennies were able to tie it after that and then again after a kill from Cox. Another kill from the All-American gave Washburn match point at 26-25 and a kill from Thompson gave Washburn the win and 2-0 lead.

Washburn hit .197 in the match while UCM had a .158 attack percentage. The Ichabods blocked nine attempts while the Jennies had six blocks. The Washburn defense dug up 73 UCM attacks while the Jennies had 59 digs.

Carly Sojka had 17 kills to lead the Jennies and Maddie Jones had nine. Haley Thompson blocked five Washburn attacks.

The win makes coach Chris Herron 9-3 against the Jennies in Lee Arena and 11-9 against them in MIAA matches. UCM still leads the series against Herron at 16-13.
