PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Ichabods gave up an 11-0 run early in the second half and never recovered in a 60-40 loss Saturday at second-ranked Pittsburg State.
Â
No. 18 Washburn fell to 12-4 overall and 4-4 in the MIAA. The Bods will play their third of four straight on the road Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Central Oklahoma.
Â
Jayna Smith and
Honor Duvall each scored seven points to lead Washburn. Smith also led with eight rebounds and Duvall grabbed seven.
Â
The Ichabods trailed 25-20 at halftime and got within four after a layup from Duvall at 18:33. The Gorillas scored 11 straight points after that to lead 40-25 and hold a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Â
Janelle Travis ended the Gorillas' run with a 3-pointer, one of two she made. She hit Washburn's only two 3-pointers as the rest of the squad shot 0 of 14 from long range.
Â
The Ichabods shot 25 percent from the field overall after a 19 percent effort in the second half. The Gorillas shot 36 percent in the game and 81 percent from the free throw line. Washburn was 12 of 19 from the line.
Â
The game started slowly for both teams as Pitt State's field goal 1:25 in to the game was the only scoring for nearly the entire first five minutes. Washburn trailed 13-6 at the 10:36 mark but six straight points from Ignoto off a pair of and-ones gave the Bods their first lead, 14-13 with 8:30 remaining in the first half. The Bods led by three points twice after that off jumpers from Smith but the Gorillas ended the half on an 8-0 run to lead by five at halftime.
Â
The 40 points scored by Washburn was the fewest since scoring 40 against St. Rose (N.Y.) in 1999-00 and the fewest scored by Washburn in an MIAA game. The Bods joined the league in 1989-90.
