Ichabods battle with sixth-ranked Tigers but can’t hold on

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Ichabods took the lead with 2:50 to play against sixth-ranked Fort Hays State but didn't score the rest of the way in a 62-58 loss Saturday night at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.
 
Washburn fell to 14-6 overall and 6-6 in the MIAA. The Tigers won their 19th straight and jumped to 12-0 in the league. The Ichabods will play Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at second-ranked Emporia State.
 
The Ichabods trailed 37-29 at halftime but battled back in the second half. They tied the game at 41-41 on a layup from Ally Nikkel with 12:57 to play and then they took the lead at 51-50 with 6:35 left after Honor Duvall hit a layup. Nikkel's three-point play at 4:54 gave the Bods a four-point lead but Fort Hays State erased that with a 4-0 run.
 
Taylor Ignoto then scored at 2:50 to give the Bods a 58-56 lead but the Tigers took the lead a minute later and Washburn had three turnovers down the stretch.
 
Ignoto led Washburn with 18 points. She was 7 of 12 from the field and 3 of 4 from the free throw line while grabbing one rebound. Casyn Buchman hit two 3-pointers and totaled 13 points. She has 107 career 3-pointers and needs one more to move in the Washburn career top 10. Jayna Smith had a season-high 12 rebounds to lead all players.
 
The Tigers hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and took advantage of 10 Washburn turnovers to build its eight-point halftime lead. The second half was played pretty evenly with Washburn shooting 36 percent and FHSU shooting 35 percent.
 
The Tigers shot 39 percent in the game while Washburn shot 37 percent. The Bods made 13 of 15 free throws while the Tigers made 9 of 14. FHSU hit seven 3s while the Ichabods made just three.
 
Washburn blocked 11 Tiger shots with Smith getting a hand on three and Duvall, Buchman and Cindy Demosthene each swatting two. The Tigers blocked four shots.
 
Kate Lehman scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Chelsea Mason had 12 points.
