TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team trailed by as many eight points and tied the score at 48 with under five minutes to play and led by two with 4:19 to play but could not hold on in a 63-60 loss to No. 8-ranked Central Missouri.
The Ichabods and Mules were tied at 48 with 2:46 to play after a pair of free throws by
Alex North, but the Mules scored five-straight points taking a 53-48 lead. Washburn cut the lead back to four at 53-49 on a free throw by
Kevin House. Three free throws by the Mules stretched the lead out to seven before a 3-point play by
Kyle Wiggins with 53 seconds to play trimmed the lead back to four.
The Mules went back ahead by seven with 42 seconds to play before a lay up by Wiggins with 33 seconds to play cut the lead back to five and then after a Washburn steal House hit two more free throws with 29 seconds to play.
The Mules then scored two more to take a 61-56 lead with 15 seconds to play. A layup by Wiggins with nine seconds to play made it a 61-58 Central advantage. After a pair of Mules free throws with eight seconds to play the Ichabods' Wiggins was fouled attempting a three. He hit the first two making the score 63-60 and after intentionally missing the third the clock ran out on the rebound before the Ichabods could get another shot off.
Wiggins led the Ichabods with 22 points as he went over the 1,000-point mark in his career becoming the 22nd Ichabod to do so. House had 13 points, which was a career-high for him.
Brennen Hughes and Kyle Wolf had 12 to lead the Mules.
Washburn was 20 of 51 overall after going only 8 of 20 from the field in the first half. The Mules finished 18 of 42 overall from the field and went 23 of 32 from the free throw line including 20 of 26 in the second half from the charity stripe. Washburn finished 14 of 20 overall from the free throw line.
