BOLIVAR, Mo. – No. 12 Washburn Volleyball returned to its winning ways with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-21) sweep of Southwest Baptist on Friday, Oct. 2.
The Ichabods improved to 14-1 (3-1 MIAA) while SBU dropped to 2-11 (0-3 MIAA)
Tied at 7 in the first set, a kill from
Leanna Willer was the first of eight straight points for the Ichabods as part of a larger 12-1 run that made it 19-8. The Bearcats did not shy away, however, and cut WU's lead to four (22-18 and 24-20) before a kill from
Sarah Vicory ended the first set, 25-10.
Washburn roared out to a 10-1 lead in the second set and never looked back, cruising to a 25-13 victory in the second set.
Trailing 9-8 in the third, the Ichabods went on a 6-0 burst to take a 14-9 lead, growing it to six soon after (19-13). SBU again fought back, however, and climbed to within four (21-17). The teams played relatively even from there, as WU closed the match with a 25-21 set three win.
Willer's 14 kills led the Ichabods, as
Taylor Selk (seven kills) and
Sarah Vicory (six kills) were also among the leaders. Both
Korie Thompson and
Carley Swan had five kills.
Liz Powell had a double-double of 13 digs and 28 assists, while
Alyssa Carney was second with 11 digs.
At the net, Willer had three blocks as Vicory and Swan each had two blocks.
The Ichabods continue their road trip on Saturday, Oct. 3 with two matches in Joplin, Mo. Washburn will take on Missouri Southern in a conference game at 1 p.m., followed by a non-conference matchup with Arkansas-Monticello at approximately 3 p.m.
