TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team lost for the first time this season in a 75-51 loss to Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon in Lee Arena. Washburn will host Peru State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
After the Ichabods hit their first shot of the day, a 3-pointer by
Javion Blake, giving Washburn its only lead of the game, Rockhurst (2-1) ripped off a 15-2 run over the next 6:28 as the Ichabods missed their next 13 shots while Rockhurst connected on 4 of 6 shots including 3 of 5 3-pointers building a 15-5 lead.
Tyas Martin's lay up with 12:55 to play broke the run by Rockhurst.
After a bucket by
David Salach with 11:04 to play in the first half cut the lead back to eight at 17-9, Rockhurst built its lead out to 17 using an 11-2 run. Washburn (2-1) would get as close as 11 near in the end of the half but trailed by 14 at the break 37-23.
In the second half the Ichabods cut the lead to 13 twice with the final time coming with 11:35 to play in the game but would not get any closer as the Hawks snapped the Ichabods' 32-game, regular season, non-conference homecourt winning streak.
Blake led the Ichabods with nine points and
Cameron Wiggins had eight.
Brady Skeens tied for a game-high with 11 rebounds while scoring four points recording three blocks. Malachi Nix scored a game-high 18 points leading four Hawks in double figures.
Washburn finished the game 16 of 51 for a 31 percent average while the Hawks were 25 of 52 for a 48 percent clip. Rockhurst hit 11 of 21 3-pointers while Washburn was 2 of 14. The Hawks also held a 37-30 advantage on the glass.
