Ichabod softball team splits on day one of SOSU Invite

DURANT, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team split a pair of games on day one of the Southeastern Oklahoma State Regional Invitational includnig a win over the No. 4-ranked host school in the opener.

Game 1 - WU 9, SOSU 0 (5 innings)
The Ichabods picked up a 9-0, run-ruled win over No. 4-ranked Southeastern Oklahoma in the opening game pounding out 12 hits in the process. The Storm was ranked No. 4 in the NFCA Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Ichabods got on the board in the top of the first with a solo home run by Cassidy Merriman and then added two in the second on a solo homer by Sierra Kemp driving in Savannah Moore who led off the inning with a single.

The Ichabods added three more in the third capped by a 3-run shot by Moore driving in Jordan Erickson and Lauren Thimmesch. In the fourth, Merriman, hit her second home run of the game putting Washburn up 8-0.

Washburn added a solo run in the fifth on an RBI single by Maddie Abbs driving in Kristen Bell.

Thimmesch picked up the complete game shutout scattering five hits and striking out two to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Game 2 - Southwestern Oklahoma 17, Washburn 6 (5 innings)
The Bulldogs scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated the Ichabods 17-6 in five innings. Washburn topped the Bulldogs one week ago in Southwestern Oklahoma's tournament 8-0.

Haylee Marsteller hit a solo home run in the second inning to put Washburn on the board and then in the fourth inning added an RBI double scoring Erickson who doubled to lead off the inning. Marina Quimby recorded an RBI single in the frame as well.

Merriman added her third home run of the day with a solo homer in the fifth and Marsteller added her second homer of the day in the fifth inning.

Carson took the loss in the circle for the Ichabods.

On Saturday Washburn will face Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M-Commerce in day two of the three day crossover.
