DURANT, Okla. -- For the second straight day the Washburn Ichabod softball team topped a nationally-ranked team as they beat No. 16 St. Mary's (Texas) 11-2 and wrapped up the crossover with an 8-1 win over Newman to go 5-1 over the three-day event. Washburn will return to play at the MSSU Zenner Classic Feb. 28-March 1.
Game 1 - Washburn 11, St. Mary's (Texas) 2 - 5 inningsThe Ichabods fell behind after the Rattler score a solo run in the top fo the first inning, but Washburn exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second inning and didn't look back leading to the win. Taylor Zimmerman, Cassidy Merriman and
Jordan Erickson all drove in runs in the inning. Washburn added three more in the fourth inning on a three-run homer by
Kristen Bell and then in the fifth she drove in two more finishing with 5 RBI in the game.
Lauren Thimmesch came in and pitched the final 2 and 2/3 innings improving to 4-0 striking out three allowing one hit.
Game 2 - Washburn 8, Newman 1Thimmesch allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the first and pitched the next five innings picking up the win improving to 5-0 on the season while Zimmerman drove in five runs in the 8-1 win over Newman. Zimmerman hit two home runs, the first in the fourth on a three-run shot and hit another three-run homer in the sixth driving in six total runs in the game. Bell added an RBI as did Savannah Moore.
