TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team opened MIAA play with a doubleheader sweep over Lincoln on Friday at the Washburn Softball Complex. Washburn will play host to Lindenwood on Saturday.
For the afternoon,
Cassidy Merriman had five hits including two doubles and drove in three while
Kristen Bell had four hits.
Marina Quimby also had five hits and scored four times.
Game 1 - Washburn 11, Lincoln 2 (6 innings)The Ichabods (8-3, 2-0 MIAA) scored seven runs in the first three innings rolling to an 11-2 win over the Blue Tigers in the opener.
The Ichabods got four in the frist capped by a 2-RBI double by
Haylee Marsteller and an 2-RBI single by
Kristen Bell.
Washburn scored another run in the second taking advantage of an error taking a 5-0 lead.
Washburn added another two runs in the third when
Cassidy Merriman had a 2-RBI double to left center scoring
Marina Quimby and
Megan Stegman.
The Blue Tigers (0-7, 0-2 MIAA) got on the board with two runs in the top of the sixth but Washburn wrapped up the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth with a 3-run home run by
Taylor Zimmerman.
Alex Sweeney scored on a wild pitch after pinch running for
Lauren Thimmesch who led off the inning with a double.
Thimmesch picked up the win improving to 6-0 scattering three hits and striking out six.
Game 2 - Washburn 8, Lincoln 5After allowing five runs including four unearned runs in the top of the first inning, Washburn rallied for an 8-5 win in game two pounding out 12 hits.
The Ichabods got one run back in the bottom of the second inning taking advantage of an error by the Blue Tigers when
Taylor Kemp drove in a run with a ground out. In the third inning, Washburn inched closer with another solo run on an RBI single by Marsteller scoring Quimby. In the third, Washburn tied the score with three runs on an RBI by Marsteller, an RBI single by
Jordan Erickson and a home run by Stegman, who would finish with 3 RBI in the second game.
Washburn took the lead with Stegman's RBI single in the fifth inning scoring Bell who singled. Washburn wrapped up their scoring with two unearned runs in the sixth inning and Stegman drew a bases loaded walk in the frame.
Samantha Carson pitched 6 1/3 innings for the win striking out two.
