Ichabod softball team opens 2015 with 1-2 start in Oklahoma

WEATHERFORD, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team opened the 2015 season with a 1-2 record after wrapping up play with an 8-0 win over Southwestern Oklahoma on Sunday. The Ichabods will return to action next Friday at the Southeastern Oklahoma Regional Crossover.

The Ichabods scored the first two runs of the game jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the bottom of the first inning when Cassidy Merriman walked and then was driven home by Jordan Erickson. However the Zias scored three runs in the top of the second to take the lead back taking advantage of a pair of errors by Washburn. The Zias added another run in the top fo the third before the Ichabods came back with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead. In the inning the Ichabods sent nine to the plate as Savannah Moore, Taylor Kemp and Kristen Bell each had RBI singles. The lead was short lived as the Zias scored a solo run in the fourth followed by three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth inning taking a 13-5 lead scoring three unearned runs. Washburn got two runs back in the sixth on a solo home run Lauren Thimmesch and an RBI single by Taylor Kemp. Eastern New Mexico added a solo run in the seventh and Thimmesch hit her second home run of the game on a 2-run shot but Washburn would get no closer losing 14-9.

Thimmesch finished the game with 3 RBI on two home runs and scored two runs. Bell had three hits to lead the Ichabods. In the circle, Taylor Kemp took the loss allowing seven earned runs in five innings as the Ichabods committed five errors in the game.

Washburn took an early lead with a solo run in the top of the first when Thimmesch scored on an RBI single by Haylee Marsteller. After going scoreless in the second inning, Washburn added two more in the third inning with RBIs by Erickson and Marsteller and then the Ichabods scored five runs in the fourth to put the game away.Marsteller hit a 2-run homer and Thimmesch added an RBI single as the Ichabods won the run-rule contest.

Thimmesch picked up the win in the circle tossing a complete-game 1-hit shutout striking out three. Marsteller finished with three hits and Thimmesch recorded two.

Science and Arts of Oklahoma 8, Washburn 7 - 8 innings | Box Score
The Ichabods scored the first seven runs of the game scoring five in the first inning capped by a pair of home runs as Savannah Moore hit a 2-run homer in her first collegiate at bat while Lauren Thimmesch had a 2-run home run and Jordan Erickson hit a solo shot staking Washburn to a 5-0 lead.

The Ichabods added two more in the top of the second as Kristen Bell led off the inning with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice by Megan Stegman. Erickson drove in a run in the second inning as well. But the Drovers scored four runs in the second, added two more in the fifth and one more in the seventh tying the score. Using the international tie-breaker, the Ichabods came up scoreless in the seventh and USAO finished the game with a solo run in the eighth for the win.

Erickson had two hits to lead Washburn and Thimmesch, Erickson and Moore all had two RBI.
