WAYNE, Neb. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Wayne State winning game one 7-1 before falling in the nightcap 7-5 to the Wildcats. Washburn returns to play on Saturday at Central Oklahoma.
Game 1 - Washburn 1, Wayne State 1Lauren Thimmesch won her 18th game of the season improving to 18-6 overall as the Ichabods won the opening game.Â
In the first, Washburn scored a pair of unearned runs on an RBI single by
Cassidy Merriman and a sac fly by Thimmesch taking the 2-0 lead.Â
Washburn added two more in the second inning on a bases loaded walk drawn by
Marina Quimby and a sac fly by Merriman.
Kristen Bell and
Taylor Zimmerman both scored in the inning after reaching on a walk and being hit by a pitch respectively.
The Wildcats got on the board in the fourth inning with a solo run but it would be the only run for the home team during the opener.
Hayle Marsteller put the Ichabods up 5-1 after a solo home run in the sixth inning and the Ichabods added two more in the seventh on a 2-RBI double by Quimby scoring
Sierra Kemp and
Megan Stegman.
Thimmesch scatter six hits and struck out three allowing the one earned run.
Quimby drove in three runs and grabbed 2 of the 5 hits for the Ichabods.
Game 2 - Wayne State 7, Washburn 5The teams combined for 12 runs and 20 hits as the Wildcats gained a split winning the second game 7-5.
Wayne State (26-16) broke a scoreless tie with Washburn (25-18) after scoring two runs in the third inning on a two-run homer. The Wildcats added a solo run in the third inning.
In the fourth, Washburn scored four runs in the fifth inning taking a 4-3 lead.
Sierra Kemp and Stegman each had singles.
Jordan Erickson recorded a 2-RBI single and Marsteller had an RBI single as well.
Wayne State added two runs in each the fifth and sixth innings going up 7-4.
In the seventh, Merriman hit a solo home run for the Ichabods' last run of the game.
Bell and Stegman each had two hits and Erickson drove in two runs to lead the Ichabods.
Taylor Kemp took the loss in the circle falling to 2-5 striking out three allowing four earned runs.
