EDMOND, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabods drew an MIAA doubleheader sweep at Central Oklahoma working overtime in the first game taking a 14-5 win in nine innings before falling the nightcap 6-1. Washburn will wrap up the regular season with a roadtrip to Missouri Western on Friday and at Northwest Missouri on Saturday. The Ichabods sit in sixth place in the MIAA standings with the top eight teams qualifying for the postseason tournament in Kansas City.
Game 1 - WU 14, UCO 5 (9 innings)The Ichabods exploded for nine runs in the ninth inning sending 12 batters to the plate earning a come-from-behind 14-5 win over the Bronchos. In the ninth inninng,
Kristen Bell led off with a single to center and
Taylor Zimmerman recorded a single of her own. After
Sierra Kemp was hit by a pitch loading the bases,
Megan Stegman recorded a 2-RBI single.
Marina Quimby reached on an error and
Cassidy Merriman's single through the left side drove in Stegman.
Jordan Erickson came to bat and her single to left scored Merriman. WIth two outs, Bell was hit by a pitch and Zimmerman's 3-run homer to left cleared the bases putting Washburn up 14-5.
Lauren Thimmesch put the Bronchos down in order picking up her 19th win of the season as she pitched all nine innings allowing only one earned run giving up eight hits in the win. Her 19 wins are the most by an Ichabod pitcher since Kelly Swygert recorded 20 in 2006.
The Ichabods were down 4-0 before Thimmesch recorded her 13th home run of the season with a three-run shot scoring Quimby, who doubled and Stegman who walked in the inning.
The Bronchos would go up 5-3 with a solo run in the fourth, but Washburn tied the score with a 2-RBI single by Zimmerman scoring
Haylee Marsteller and Bell. Neither team would score in the sixth, seventh or eighth innings setting up Washburn's nine-spot in the ninth.
Quimby and Zimmerman each finished with three hits and Zimmerman drove in five in the game and Thimmesch finished with 3 RBI. Stegman had two with both coming in the ninth inning.
Quimby, Thimmesch and Erickson each tied an Ichabod record with six at bats in the game before the 24th, 25th and 26th Washburn softball players to have six at bats in a game.
Game 2 - UCO 6, WU 1Washburn (26-19, 13-9 MIAA) was held scoreless by UCO starting pitcher Kelsey Berlin until a home run by Marsteller in the seventh inning as she allowed five hits and recorded five strikeouts in the win for the Bronchos (33-14, 14-6 MIAA) gaining the split.
UCO scored one in the first inning and broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning going up 6-0.
Marsteller finished with two of the Ichabods' five hits in the game.
Taylor Kemp (2-6) took the loss in the circle giving up nine hits and striking out two.
In the twinbill, Marsteller and Quimby each had four hits and Merriman, Zimmerman and Thimmesch each had three while Quimby also added three doubles. Zimmerman finished with 5 RBI and Thimmesch had three.
