TOPEKA, Kan. -- A Newman goal off a free kick was the difference in a 2-1 loss to the Jets by the Washburn soccer team on Wednesday night in Yager Stadium. The Ichabods will return to action on Friday against Emporia State in a non-conference matchup with the Hornets at 6 p.m.
After the Jets took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break,
Bailey Wobig scored her first goal of the season from infront off the box off an assist from
Paige Swanson tying the score at 1-1 in the 54th minute.
Neither team would score until Morgan Foster recorded her fifth goal of the season for the Jets off a free kick from 13 yards out into the right hand corner of the net after the Ichabods (0-2-2) were whistled for a hand ball in the 74th minute for what would be the match-winning goal for Newman (2-2-1).
Washburn and Newman each had nine shots in the match with the Ichabods holding an 8 to 3 advantage going with the end to the north end of the pitch. Newman's goalkeeper Kelsi Langley had six saves in the match including five in the second half. Washburn's
Kaitlin Minnich had two saves in net for the Ichabods.
The Ichabods had seven shots on goal paced by
Presley Wiggins and Swanson who each recorded two.
Morgan El-Attrache led the team with three shots.
