Ichabods fall in physical Turnpike Tussle battle with Hornets

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod soccer team fell 3-0 to Emporia State on Friday night in Yager Stadium in a physical battle which saw a total of 43 fouls called on the two teams in a non-conference matchup. Washburn returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Nebraska-Kearney in Topeka.

The Hornets scored 4:59 into the match when McKenzie Koch scored past the Ichabod goalkeeper Kaitlin Minnich off an assist from Amelie Heun.

Neither team scored until the 86th minute when Heun scored on a header from a free kick from Koch. The Hornets added another goal 1:59 later when Jaide Allenbrand scored off a corner from Kelsey Wakefield.

Yadira RIvera recorded four saves in the match for the Hornets earning the shutout. Minnich finished with five saves for the Ichabods.

The Hornets outshot the Ichabods 13 to 5 in the match and had eight shots on goal compared to four for the Ichabods. Cadence Bourne had two shots on goal for the Ichabods and Presley Wiggins and Morgan El-Attrache each had one.

The 23 fouls called on the Hornets were the most by an Ichabod opponent since Oct. 21, 2006 when Truman State had 23 called on them and one shy of the opponent's high-water mark of fouls of 24 set by Southwest Baptist on Sept. 29, 2006. The 20 fouls called on the Ichabods were the third-most in school history tying the 20 they were whistled against Emporia State on Sept. 26, 2005. The 43 combined fouls were five shy of the Washburn record for the most fouls called in a match.

There were also seven yellow cards handed out in the match with two going to the ESU head coach and assistant coach during the match and four going against Ichabod players and one being pulled on a Hornet player.
