TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-1 win over Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday afternoon inside Yager Stadium as head coach
Chris Jones picked up his first win as a collegiate head coach. The Ichabods will open MIAA play at Lindenwood next Friday in St. Charles, Mo.
The Ichabods jumped on the board in the 17th minute when
Emily Stauffer recorded her first goal of the season on a corner kick assist from
Morgan El-Attrache staking the Ichabods to a 1-0 lead over the Lopers.
Washburn scored again in the 44th minute when
Michelle Keleher scored her first goal of the season from infront of the goal off an assist from
Cadence Bourne on a free kick 50-yards from the net putting Washburn up 2-0.
Nebraska-Kearney tied the score in the 82nd minute on a 40-yard free kick from Montanna Hosterman for her second goal of the season.
In the 87nd minute, Washburn went up 3-1 after
Paige Swanson followed her own rebound off a saved shot from 10 yards out as she scored her first collegiate goal.
Kaitlin Minnich recorded two saves while the Ichabods outshot the Lopers 14 to 7.
The win was the first for the Ichabods snapping a 27-game winless streak dating back to a 2-0 win over Missouri Southern on Oct. 26, 2013 in Topeka. Washburn's three goals in the match was the most by an Ichabod team since scoring three against Northwest Missouri on Oct. 13, 2013.
