TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods had five players in double figures as the Ichabods never trailed as they defeated Missouri Western 78-67 on Wednesday in Lee Arena. Washburn returns to action on Saturday hosting Northwest Missouri at 7 p.m.
Washburn led for 39:23 of 40 minutes in the game as
Javion Blake hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring en route to a game-high 16 points as the Ichabods (10-5, 6-4 MIAA) scored the first six points of the game. Washburn stretched its lead to as many as 14 in the first half at 28-14 after a pair of Blake free throws and the Griffons would get no closer than eight the rest of the opening half.
In the second half after the Griffons (5-11, 3-7 MIAA) cut the lead to 10 with 16;19 to play in the game, Washburn scored eight straight points building the lead back to 18 at 54-35 with 13:18 to play in the game and Missouri Western would not get within 10 points the rest of the night after leading by as many as 19 in the second half.
Following Blake's 16 points,
Cameron Wiggins scored 13 points and
Robert Christopher scored 12 off the bench.
Brady Skeens recorded his fourth double double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds adding three blocks, three assists and two steals.
Andy Wilson scored 10 points off the bench.
Currie Byrd led the Griffons with 14 points scoring 13 in the first half.
Washburn shot 52 percent in the game hitting 27 of 52 shots compared to 23 of 64 shooting for the Griffons hitting 36 percent from the field. The Ichabods were 6 of 13 from 3-point range and 18 of 24 from the free throw line and outrebounded Missouri Western 39 to 32 on the glass.Â
