Washburn Ichabods pick up 2nd-straight OT win in thriller with Blue Tigers

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The streak continues as the Washburn Ichabods won their 26th straight game over Lincoln with an 88-86 win in overtime topping the Blue Tigers.

The road to the 26th-straight win over the Blue Tigers (9-4, 5-2 MIAA) was not an easy one as Washburn (9-3, 5-2 MIAA) ended Lincoln's five-game winning streak while winning its second-straight overtime game. The Blue Tigers built an eight-point lead with 9:08 to play in the game after turning a 53-43 Ichabod lead into a 65-57 Blue Tiger lead after a 20-4 Lincoln run.

Washburn rallied and tied the score at 68 with an 11-3 run of its own as Andy Wilson and Cameron Wiggins each connected on 3-pointers during the run. The Blue Tigers jumped back out to a five point lead at 73-68 after a 5-0 run before Washburn again came back and scored 7 of the last 9 points in regulation capped by a Randall Smith lay up with six seconds left tying the score at 75 sending the game to overtime as Brady Skeens blocked a Blue Tiger layup right before the buzzer with his fourth block of the game.

In overtime, Washburn jumped out to a 79-75 lead before Lincoln would come back and tie the score at 81 with 1:56 to play on a deep 3-pointer by Anthony Virdure, who scored a game-high 31 points leading Lincoln. The Ichabods finished the game with free throws by Javion Blake and RObert Christopher and then a lay up by Blake putting Washburn up 85-81 with 38 seconds to play. A 3-pointer by Virdure with 31 seconds to play cut the lead to one at 85-84.

Cameron Wiggins, who led the Ichabods with 26 points, hit 1 of 2 free throw attempts with 22 seconds to play and the Blue Tigers' 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed as the Ichabods picked up the win.

Other leading scorers for the Ichabods included Blake who scored 20 points and Smith who scored 11 points. Skeens finished with seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds adding four blocks for the second-straight game.

Following Virdure's 31 points, Jaylon Smith scored 26 points and O'Shai Clark had 19 leading the Blue Tigers.

Washburn led 42-41 at the break and finished 27 of 59 from the field and 9 of 21 fom 3-point range. The Blue Tigers were 31 of 67 and hit 14 of 30 from 3-point range. Washburn was 23 of 35 from the free throw line and the Blue Tigers were 8 of 15.

Washburn is back in action on Thursday at Northeastern State starting a two-game road trip adding Central Oklahoma on Saturday in Edmond.
