The remainder of the first set swayed back and forth as the sides built respectable leads before letting the opposition either creep back in or over the lead. Seven ties and three lead changes later, Pittsburg State (4-18, 2-8 MIAA) pulled away late tallying five of the last seven points for the set point.
In the second set, Washburn went on the offensive picking up eight of the first 10 points for an 8-2 lead. The Ichabods never looked back as they remained out front en route to opening up a double-digit lead as kills from Vicory and Bates helped make it 20-10. PSU was able to pick a handful of points down the stretch but it was not enough as a block from Maxwell sealed the set in WU's favor and tied the match at 1-1.
After dropping the third set, 25-15, the Ichabods steamrolled the Gorillas in the fourth set ad they opened with a 12-4 lead. From then on, Washburn kept its foot on the pedal en route to seizing a 25-12 result and forcing a fifth set.
In the decisive frame, both sides jostled to build an early lead. With the score tied 3-3, Washburn claimed its final lead of the evening as three consecutive errors against Pittsburg State make it 6-3. Washburn pushed the score to 8-4 before the Gorillas cut the lead to one thanks to a 4-1 run. Feeling the pressure, the Ichabods rattled off six unanswered to put set out of reach and complete the comeback.
Washburn returns to action on Saturday as it concludes its four-match road swing against No. 11 Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
