UM slip past Women's Basketball late

TOPEKA, Kan. --- The Washburn women's basketball dropped its first game of the season Saturday with a 66-62 loss to the University of Mary and slid to 1-1 on the season.

The Ichabods were led Erika Lane who finished with 16 points as she converted six of 17 attempts from the field. Reagan Phelan finished with 11 points while Jharian Bowen and Tatiana Grant each had nine. Felisha Gibbs had a team-best eight rebounds, while Bowen, Alyxis Bowens and Charisma Alexander chipped in with at least four boards each.

Washburn controlled the first half as it outshot Mary 43.3 percent to 37.5. After taking a 13-8 lead into the second quarter, the Ichabods assumed their largest lead of the game when Bowen knocked down one of her three attempts from behind the arc to make it 22-12 with 7:04 to play. The Marauders then responded with a 12-4 run cutting the WU advantage to two.  Washburn then retook a 10-point lead with 1:20 left thanks to an 8-0 spurt making it 34-24. Mary then responded with five unanswered points to trim gap to 34-29 heading into the break.

In the third, WU led by as much as nine when a Phelan jumper pushed the score to 43-34 with 6:35 to play. The Ichabod margin then began to shrink as the Marauders netted 12 of the next 16 points before a pair of free throws helped them move out front 48-47. The lead was short lived as Lane knocked a three-pointer before the end of the period to give Washburn a 50-48 lead as it headed into the fourth.

Mary reclaimed the advantage midway through the quarter as following a three-pointer from Hannah Larson to make it 60-58 with 4:53 left. The Marauders led the rest of the way pushing the gap to much as seven as they scored six of the final 10 points of the game.

The Ichabods will continue its home stand on Monday when they take on Saint Mary. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
