ROCHESTER, Minn. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Winona State Dome Classic beating Northern State 4-0 before falling to No. 23-ranked Winona State 8-6. Washburn returns to action on Saturday against Upper Iowa and Northern State for a second time.
Game 1 - Washburn 4, Northern State 0 (8 innings)Erin Keeney's 3-run homer in the top of the eighth inning broke a scoreless tie propelling the Ichabods to a 4-0 win over Northern State.
Taylor Zimmerman also scored in the inning after a throwing error by the Wolves.
Samantha Carson picked an eight inning complete game shutout striking out four and walking one improving to 2-1 on the season. She faced only 28 batters in the game over eight innings.
Ashley Ruder, Keeney and Zimmerman all had two hits while eight of the nine batters in the Ichabod lineup recorded at least one hit.
Game 2 - No. 23 Winona State 8, Washburn 6The Warriors scored a solo run in the top of the first and then added four more in the second and three more in the third leading to the 8-0 lead over the Ichabods. Washburn (3-4) scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a 2-RBI single by

Haylee Marsteller and
Taylor Zimmerman and then
Marina Quimby's ground out scored
Lacie Myers pulling Washburn within 8-3.

Erin Keeney scored on a wild pitch and
Haylee Marsteller's ground out scored Zimmerman trimming the Warriors' lead to 8-6. The Ichabods would leave a runner on in the seventh but come up short in the two-run loss. Zimmerman was 2 for 3 with 2 doubles while scoring two runs and
Sierra Kemp drove in a pair of runs. Marsteller finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Ashley Wills took the loss allowing seven earned runs in 3 and 1/3 innings pitched.
Samantha Carson pitched three innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit.
