TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team had career nights from four players but it was not enough as the Ichabods fell 103-95 on Saturday night in Lee Arena to Missouri Southern.
Brady Skeens recorded a Lee Arena record with 22 rebounds while becoming the first Ichabod to record a game with at least 20 rebounds and 20 points finishing with career-highs in both categories.
Javion Blake scored a career-high 20 points and
Christian Ulsaker also scored 20 points in the loss for Washburn (12-9, 8-8 MIAA).
Randall Smith finished one shy of the school record for single-game assists with 16, trailing only Jordan Canfield's 16 set against Missouri –St. Louis on Feb. 11, 1995.
After trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, the Ichabods responded by coming back to tie the score at 74 with 7:22 remaining in the game. A quick 5-0 run by Missouri Southern (14-9, 11-6 MIAA) pushed the lead out to 79-74.
After a layup by Smith cutting the lead to three with 5:48 to play in the game at 81-78, the Lions would hit a 3-pointer and Washburn would get within four on four different trips down the court but could not get any closer as the Lions went 9 of 10 the final 2:29 of the game from the free throw line securing the win.
The 22 rebounds by Skeens were one shy of a school game record set by Joe Luebcke against Emporia State in 1974 and he was the first Ichabod since
Alex North to record at least 20 rebounds in a game. Andy Berlin, who shared the Lee Arena record for rebounds with North, had 20 rebounds and 19 points against Truman on March 1, 1995. The double double was Skeens' eighth of the year.
Cameron Wiggins also reached double figures for the Ichabods scoring 11 points.
Taevaunn Prince scored 32 to lead the Lions going 10 of 10 from the field and 10 of 10 from the free throw line hitting both 3-point attempts in the win.
Washburn was 34 of 75 from the field overall hitting 10 of 27 3-pointers. The Lions tied a school record with 15 3-pointers of their own going 34 of 60 from the field for a 57 percent average. The Lions also hit 20 of 22 free throws.
