Baseball forces extras but falls late at SBU, 5-4

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Washburn Baseball forced extras with a solo home run in the ninth but couldn't complete its comeback, falling 5-4 to Southwest Baptist in 10 innings on Saturday, April 9.

Washburn is now 21-13 and 16-8 in the MIAA as its seven-game win streak came to an end in the weekend finale.  Washburn took the series, however, 2-1, after winning the first two contests on the weekend.

David Gauntt went 2-for-5 on the day with two RBI while Carnahan was 1-for-3 with two walks.  Tanner Triggs had two RBI as well and went 1-for-2 with a home run and a walk.

Jacob Head went 4.2 innings in the start, scattering six hits with two runs allowed with a strikeout.  Greg Mason entered in the fifth and threw the next 2.1 frames, giving up two runs while striking out three.  Jaren Kutze (2-2) took the loss, giong 2.1 innings with one run allowed and one strikeout.

Scoreless through two and a half, SBU took a 1-0 lead in the third and extended it to 2-0 with a run in the fifth before Washburn tied it off an RBI single from Gauntt, plating Riley Krane and Kyle Carnahan. Later in the inning with Gauntt on third, Triggs hit a sac fly deep enough to score Gauntt and give WU a 3-2 lead.

SBU, however, struck back with two of its own in the seventh to regain the lead 4-3, and Washburn went to the ninth looking to extend the game, and Triggs came through with a solo home run (his third home run of 2016) to tie it at 4-all and force extras after a scoreless bottom half of the ninth.  The comeback wasn't completed, however, as SBU walked off with a run in the bottom of the 10th.

Washburn heads for Emporia, Kan., this Wednesday, April 13 for a 5 p.m., midweek game that opens a three-game series between the teams.
