Ichabod football team returns home to host Lindenwood on Saturday

Opening Notes
• The Washburn Ichabod football team returns home on Saturday night to face the Lindenwood Lions to wrap up Family Day festivities at Washburn.
•  The Ichabods (1-1, 1-1 MIAA) are coming off a 41-7 loss at No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri on Sept. 8 in Maryville, Mo.
•  The Lions (1-1, 1-1 MIAA) after falling at Northeastern State in a 35-31 loss.
•  The Ichabods are looking to snap a two-game losing streak to the Lions, who won the last meeting 20-14 in St. Charles, Mo. and then won the last game played in Topeka in a 44-38 shootout win.
•  Washburn is 2-2 against the Lions all-time.
•  The Ichabods are coming off a 5-6 season finishing eighth in the 2015 MIAA standings.
•  After a loss in the Craig Schurig era, the Ichabods are 30-27.
•  Lindenwood linebacker Connor Harris broke the NCAA Division II tackles record against Northeastern State and now has 522 for his career. The NCAA all-division record is 550 total tackles.

Ichabod Defensive Notes
•  After the Northwest Missouri jumped out to a 17-0 lead after racking up 136 yards in the first quarter, the Ichabod defense tossed a shutout in the second quarter while holding the Bearcats to 19 yards on 10 plays and no first downs in the second quarter.
•  Washburn held Northwest Missouri to 320 yards after the Bearcats recorded 491 yards against Emporia State in their opener.
•  Cody Heiman leads the team with 15 tackles with six solo stops adding two tackles for loss and a sack.
•  Spenser Matthews leads the Ichabods with three tackles for loss for 11 yards and has two sacks.
•  Cedric Gonzalez had a career-high four tackles (four solos) against Northwest.
•  Trey Merritt recorded a career-high four tackles (all solo) against Northwest Missouri.
•  The Ichabods have the third-best rush defense in the league allowing 100 yards per game trailing Missouri Western (20.0 ypg) and Northwest Missouri (81.5 ypg).
•  The Ichabods are fifth in the league in sacks with four for 21 yards … Northwest Missouri leads the league with nine sacks.

Ichabod Offensive Notes
•  The Washburn Ichabod offense recorded 12 plays of at least 20 yards this season with nine of those coming through the air.
•  Jake Horner recorded the longest two plays of 63- and 50-yards on pass receptions from Derek McGinnis.
•  Horner recorded a career-high 153 yards receiving in the game against Northeastern State on four catches and made his third touchdown in an Ichabod uniform.
•  The 63-yard pass by McGinnis tied his longest for his career.
•  James Brania-Hopp's 33-yard reception against Northwest Missouri was a career-long setting up an Ichabod touchdown.
•  Derek McGinnis has passed for 2,775 yards, which ranks 10th all-time at Washburn.
 
Ichabod Special team Notes
•  Perry Schmiedeler recorded a career-high three field goals including a long of 39 yards against the RiverHawks and he scored a career-high 12 points with the three field goals and three extra points.
•  Perry Schmiedeler is eighth in the MIAA in scoring at 6.5 points per game.
•  The nine punts by Perry Schmiedeler against Northwest Missouri tied for the ninth-highest single game total in school history.

•  Lindenwood is 1-1 this season after falling in the final seconds at Northeastern State 35-31.
•  The Lions knocked off Central Oklahoma 49-26 in their season opener at home.
•  Calen Campbell leads the team with 121.0 yards per game and rushed for 146 yards against Northeastern State.
•  Mason Bendigo is averaging 238.5 yards per game through the air and has four touchdown passes with five interceptions completing 55 percent of his passing attempts.

Last meeting with Lindenwood
(09/3/2015) ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- A Lindenwood touchdown with 23 seconds to play in the game was the difference at the Lions topped the Ichabods 20-14 in the season opener.
With 1:44 to play in the game after an Ichabod fake field goal attempt was halted, the Lions took over and drove 64 yards in 10 plays for the game-winning score.
After a scoreless first half in which the Ichabods blocked two field attempts by the Lions with blocks by Peter Pfannenstiel and Cody Heiman, Washburn came out with the opening drive of the second half and scored the first points of the game with an 18-yard passing touchdown from Derek McGinnis to Jordan Hart with 12:07 to play.
The Lions scored with two minutes to play in the third quarter on a 17-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jesse Scroggins tying the score. Lindenwood took the lead on a 45-yard pick-six with 11:22 to play in the game putting the Lions up 14-13 after the missed extra point.
Washburn took the lead with 9:42 to play in the game at 14-13 on a McGinnis to Sam Eickhoff capping a five-play, 71-yard drive in 1:34.
Neither team would score anymore until the game-winning drive by the Lions.
The Ichabods outgained the Lions 393 to 329 in the game as the Ichabod defense held the Lions to 183 passing yards holding them to 5.5 yards per play while the Ichabods averaged 8.1 yards per play.
Akhmad Abdul-Razzaq finished with a team-high nine tackles with three tackles for loss. Alec Steuber, Cody Heiman and Shay Wooten each had seven.
Hart finished with six catches for 84 yards and one score leading the Ichabod receivers. Connor Crimmins had five catches for 57 yards. Derek McGinnis was 19 of 30 passing for 250 yards and two scores.
Hayden Groves led the Ichabods with 101 all-purpose yards leading the Ichabods with 56 yards rushing while Brandon Bourbon had 18 carries for 53 yards.
 
Last time out for Lindenwood
(9/8/2016) Lindenwood linebacker Connor Harris broke the NCAA Division II tackles record on Thursday night in Tahlequah, Okla., but the Lions fell in the final minute of the game by a 35-31 score to Northeastern State.
Harris recorded his eighth tackle of the game in the third quarter which gave him 518 for his career, the most for any defender in NCAA Division II history. He finished with four more tackles as he moves closer to the NCAA All-Division record of 550.
The record-breaking night though was spoiled after the RiverHawks scored 14 points in the final 5:32 of the game for a come-from-behind victory. A 33-yard touchdown pass got Northeastern State within three points with under six minutes to play.
Lindenwood went three-and-out, but caught a big break when Northeastern State fumbled the punt and gave the ball back to the Lions. The offense again couldn't get 10 yards and Harris punted the ball which was downed on the RiverHawks' two-yard line with 2:11 remaining.
That was enough time though as Northeastern State got its passing game going. The Riverhawks had five passes over 10 yards, including a 17-yard game-winning pass with 33 seconds left.
Lindenwood was able to advance the ball to Northeastern State's 34 yards line, but an interception on a Hail Mary pass ended the game.
For the second straight week, turnovers were the difference in the game. The Lions were a plus-four in week one of the season, but lost the turnover battle by three this week. Two of those turnovers led to Northeastern State touchdowns in the first half, helping the Riverhawks lead 17-14 in the first half despite the Lions having the statistical edge.
The second half saw the lead change four times. Lindenwood scored on its first drive of the second half to take a 17-14 lead, but Northeastern State answered right back. The Lions then retook the lead late in the third quarter on a Deantrell Prince touchdown.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Lions defense scored its third touchdown of the season when Wesley Thomas picked up a fumble and went 46 yards for the touchdown. That gave the Lions a 31-21 lead, but too much time was left in the game.
Lindenwood finished with 434 yards of total offense, compared to 420 for Northeastern State. The Lions had 221 rushing yards and 213 through the air, while the RiverHawks had 300 passing yards and just 120 rushing yards. The Lions defense held the RiverHawks to seven-of-19 on third-down plays, but Lindenwood converted just three-of-18 and had five total turnovers.
Antron Watts had a team-high 13 tackles, including two tackles for loss. Harris finished with 12 tackles and one tackle for loss.
Offensively, Calen Campbell had his first 100-yard rushing game with 146 yards, and he scored one touchdown. Mason Bendigo threw one touchdown and finished with 213 passing yards. Kendell Sparks caught nine passes for 61 yards, and Prince finished with seven catches for 87 yards.
 
Last time out for the Ichabods
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods lost for the first time this season as they fell to No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri 41-7 on Thursday night at Bearcat Stadium. Washburn returns to action when they will play host to Lindenwood on Sept. 17 as part of Family Day activities with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
After the Bearcats jumped out to a 17-0 lead after racking up 136 yards in the first quarter, the Ichabod defense tossed a shutout in the second quarter while holding the Bearcats to 19 yards on 10 plays and no first downs in the second quarter.
Washburn cut the lead to 17-7 when Mickeel Stewart on a 1-yard touchdown dive with 7:16 to play in the first half.
Northwest would go on to score the 24 points to close out the game at the 41-7 win.
Washburn finished the game with 215 total yards holding Northwest Missouri to 320 yards after recording 491 yards against Emporia State in its opener.
Curtis Whitten recorded 25 yards rushing on five carries and Stewart had 19 yards on 11 carries and one score.
Derek McGinnis was held to 91 yards passing completing 8 of 26 passes.
Carey Woods had 45 yards receiving on two catches to lead the Ichabods.
Cody Heiman had five tackles to lead the Ichabods with five solo stops and one sack.

WACO, Texas -- The Ichabods did not receive votes in the first regular season poll of the 2016 season. Under head coach Craig Schurig, the Ichabods have been ranked or have received votes in the AFCA poll 55 times and have been ranked in the top 10 a total of 15 times.

The Ichabods hit the road again to take on Nebraska-Kearney with a 2 p.m. kick time. Washburn is back in action at home on Oct. 1 when they will face Pittsburg State with kick scheduled for 1 p.m.
