Ichabod volleyball team off to Oklahoma for MIAA/GAC Challenge

Ichabod Volleyball Storylines
•        The No. 14 Washburn Ichabod volleyball team will wrap up crossover and invitational play for the season at the MIAA/GAC Crossover in Shawnee, Okla.
•        The Ichabods will face East Central at 10 a.m. on Friday and then battle host school Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m.
•        On Saturday, the Ichabods will take on Southeastern Oklahoma State and Northwestern Oklahoma in matches at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
•        The Ichabods were 2-2 this past weekend at the Palm Beach Atlantic Bash at the Beach falling to No. 17-ranked Ferris State and No. 19-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic in 3-2 matches.
•        Washburn picked up sweeps over Florida Tech and Embry-Riddle.
•        The Washburn volleyball program has gone 971-764 all-time and in NCAA play the Ichabods are 600-345 as the Ichabods won match number 600 as an NCAA school in the 3-0 win over Embry-Riddle on Sept. 10.
•        Alyssa Carney leads the MIAA and is 75th in the nation in digs per set at 4.86.
•        Sarah Vicory is ranked 22nd in the nation in hitting percentage and third in the MIAA hitting .401 this season.
•        Makayla Maxwell is 59th in the nation and sixth in the MIAA in hitting percentage with a .354 number.
•        Carney is also fourth in the MIAA in aces per set and Leanna Willer is sixth.
•        Willer is ninth in the MIAA in kills per set with 3.04 and she is ranked fourth in total attacks with 266.
•        The 30 attacks by Kelsey Barrick against Ferris State was a career high.
•        Natalie Bates had a career-high 19 digs against Ferris State.
•        The 30 attacks by Kelsey Barrick against Ferris State was a career high and the 19 kills  against Palm Beach Atlantic was a career high.
•        Shayla Conner had a career-high 23 assists against Palm Beach Atlantic and set a new digs high with 12 against PBA and Embry-Riddle.
•        Erick Montgomery had a career-high eight kills against Embry-Riddle and Makayla Maxwell had career-highs of eight kills against Ferris State and Palm Beach Atlantic.
•        Carney's 1,514 career digs is 14th on the Division II active list and ranks 47th.
•        Vicory's 966 career kills is 35th in NCAA Division II active ranks and it is 155th in NCAA Division II history … her hitting percentage is eighth-best active total, and her matches played is 20th on the active chart and her 368 total blocks are the fifth-highest active total in NCAA Division II.
•        Willer's 1,309 kills are eighth on the career active chart and ranks 28th in the NCAA DII ranks all-time … her 3.56 kills per set for her career is 15th on the active chart.
•        Washburn returns 11 lettermen from last season's 28-6 team which reached the NCAA postseason for the 12th-straight season and for 13 of the last 14 seasons.
 
 Start me up
•        Under Chris Herron, WU has a history of starting the season hot in the first month of play, including an going 32-4 over the last two seasons.
•        All-time under Herron, Washburn is 217-27 in the first month of the season.
•        The Ichabods have lost no more than four games in the first month of the season since Herron's arrival, and no more than three since 2006 … this season the Ichabods are 22-6 in sets won after the first two weekends of action.
•        In 2015, Washburn was 20-1 when winning the first set … the Ichabods lost the first set 12 times in 2015 and finished 8-4 in those matches … the only loss when winning the first set came in the regular season finale at Central Oklahoma … this season the Ichabods are 6-1 when winning the first set of the match with the lone loss coming to Ferris State in Florida.
 
 Record chart watch
•        Senior outside hitter Leanna Willer sits at 1,309 kills at Washburn which rank 11th on the all-time chart … she needs one more to move into the top 10 all-time at Washburn … in her three full seasons at Washburn Willer has averaged 408 kills a season (377 as a freshman, 383 as a sophomore and 464 as a junior) which would put her around 1,632 which would be third all-time at Washburn.
•        Senior middle hitter Sarah Vicory has record 966 kills needing 34 more to become the 20th member of the 1,000 kill club at Washburn … Vicory's .347 hitting percent ranks second all-time at Washburn entering her final season as an Ichabod … Mollie Lacy (2008-11) recorded a .365 hitting percentage to sit on top of the all-time chart … Vicory's 368 total blocks are 10th all-time at Washburn after recording nine this past weekend … with nine more blocks she can move into the top six all-time.
•        Senior setter Natalie Bates is 11th on the all-time assist chart with 1,465…to move into the top 10 she needs 49 additional assists.
•        Senior libero Alyssa Carney has 1,285 career digs which is 15th all-time at Washburn recording that total in two-plus years …her 5.18 digs per set are second all-time at Washburn trailing Erica Cowhick's 5.51 digs per set from 2004-07.
 
 MIAA/GAC Crossover opponents
•        East Central
         The Ichabods have won all three meetings in the series … ECU is 2-6 this season and have losses to Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western this season … Herron is 2-0 against ECU.
•        Oklahoma Baptist
         The Ichabods and the Bison have never met … OBU is 4-6 this season and have losses to Missouri Western and to Pittsburg State.
•        Southeastern Oklahoma State
         The Savage Storm is 5-3 this season and has a loss to Central Oklahoma … Washburn leads the all-time series 4-0 … Herron is 3-0 against SOSU.
•        Northwestern Oklahoma State
         The Ichabods are 3-1 all-time against the Rangers … Northwestern Oklahoma is 0-10 this season … the Ichabods have won the last three meetings against the Rangers … Herron is 2-0 against the Rangers.
 
 Last time out
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Washburn Ichabods split a pair of matches on the final day of the Palm Beach Atlantic Bash at the Beach sweeping Embry-Riddle before losing to No. 19-ranked Palm Beach, Fla., in five sets.
After the match Sarah Vicory and Alyssa Carney were each named to the all-tournament team.
#10 Washburn 3, Embry-Riddle 0 (25-20,25-19,25-15)
The Ichabods led from start to finish over Embry-Riddle as they won 25-20, 25-19 and 25-15 improving to 6-1 on the season.
Washburn hit .240 in the match while holding ERU to .129 including a .053 mark in the third set.
Leanna Willer led the Ichabods with 10 kills while Erica Montgomery and Taylor Selk each had eight kills. Natalie Bates recorded 16 assists and nine digs while Shayla Conner recorded a double double with 10 assists and 12 digs. Alyssa Carney led the Ichabods with 14 digs.
#19 Palm Beach Atlantic 3, #10 Washburn 2 (25-22,19-25,19-25,25-21,15-11)
In a see-saw match against the NCAA Division II runner-ups from 2015, the Ichabods fell behind 1-0 after losing the first set 25-22, but rebounded to win the second and third sets by identical scores of 25-19. The Sailfish took the fourth set 25-21 before wrapping the win with a 15-11 score in the fifth set.
Kelsey Barrick recorded a career-high 19 kills in the match while Leanna Willer had 12 and Vicory had 11. Willer recorded a double double adding 17 digs.
Bates had 30 assists and Conner recorded her second double double of the day with 23 assists and 12 digs. Carney had 27 digs to lead the Ichabods.
Washburn returns action on Sept. 16-17 at the GAC/MIAA Crossover in Shawnee, Okla., where they will take on Southeastern Oklahoma State, Oklahoma Baptist, Southwestern Oklahoma State and East Central.

•        Washburn has been ranked in the AVCA poll 183 times in program history which is 15th all-time in Division II history.
•        The Ichabods' highest ranking was No. 2 on Oct. 18, 2010.
•        Washburn has been ranked in the top 10 112 times, which is ninth all-time among NCAA Division II schools.
•        Under Chris Herron, the Ichabods have been ranked in the top 10 111 times - all but one time in school history have come under Herron's leadership.
 
 MIAA Preseason coaches poll
•        Washburn volleyball was picked first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, released Thursday, Aug. 11 by the conference office.  Washburn received five first place votes and 110 total points, earning the top nod for the first time since 2012.  Washburn finished the 2015 season at 28-6.
 
 Winning
•        The Ichabods have made a habit out of appearing in the NCAA, reaching that milestone the past 12 years and 13 times under head coach Chris Herron ... additionally, Washburn has won five MIAA Championships under Herron and has its sights set on another in 2015 ... This season, Washburn returns an All-American to the court for the ninth-straight year in Sarah Vicory and Leanna Willer, two of 29 all-time All-Americans at Washburn.
