No. 10 Ichabod volleyball team off to Florida for Bash at the Beach

Ichabod Volleyball Storylines
•        The No. 10 Washburn Ichabod volleyball team will head to the Sunshine State for four matches starting on Friday at the Hyatt Place Bash at the Beach hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic.
•        The Ichabods will start off with No. 17-ranked Ferris State and Florida Tech on day one and then wrap up the two-day event with Embry-Riddle and No. 19-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic on Sept. 10.
•        The Ferris State was ranked No. 8 in the preseason AVCA top 25 poll and Palm Beach was ranked No. 3 in the preseason poll and were the national runner-ups in 2015.
•        The Ichabods improved to 36-0 all-time in the Washburn Invitational after sweeping Quincy, Mary, Midwestern State and Drury this past weekend.
•        The 10 digs by Taylor Selk against Mary was a career-high.
•        The Washburn volleyball program has gone 969-762 all-time and in NCAA play the Ichabods are 598-343 as the Ichabods are looking for win No. 600 since joining the NCAA ranks.
•        All-time the Ichabods are now 34-14 in season openers and dating back to 1989 when the Ichabods joined the NCAA ranks and the MIAA, Washburn has gone 23-5 in its first match of the season.
•        Washburn returns 11 lettermen from last season's 28-6 team which reached the NCAA postseason for the 12th-straight season and for 13 of the last 14 seasons.
•        The Ichabods improved to 15-0 in season openers under head coach Chris Herron.
 
 Hot Starts
•        Under Chris Herron, WU has a history of starting the season hot in the first month of play, including an going 30-2 over the last two seasons.
•        All-time under Herron, Washburn is 215-25 in the first month of the season.
•        The Ichabods have lost no more than four games in the first month of the season since Herron's arrival, and no more than three since 2006 … this season the Ichabods are 12-0 in sets after the first weekend of action.
 
 Quick starts
•        In 2015, Washburn was 20-1 when winning the first set … the Ichabods lost the first set 12 times in 2015 and finished 8-4 in those matches … the only loss when winning the first set came in the regular season finale at Central Oklahoma.
•        This season the Ichabods are 4-0 when winning the first set of the match after picking up four sweeps at the Washburn Invitational.
 
 Record chart watch
•        Senior outside hitter Leanna Willer sits at 1,271 kills at Washburn which rank 11th on the all-time chart … she needs 39 to move into the top 10 all-time … in her three full seasons at Washburn Willer has averaged 408 kills a season (377 as a freshman, 383 as a sophomore and 464 as a junior) which would put her around 1,632 which would be third all-time at Washburn.
•        Senior middle hitter Sarah Vicory has record 922 kills needing 78 more to become the 20th member of the 1,000 kill club at Washburn … Vicory's .347 hitting percent ranks second all-time at Washburn entering her final season as an Ichabod … Mollie Lacy (2008-11) recorded a .365 hitting percentage to sit on top of the all-time chart … Vicory's 355 total blocks are 13th all-time at Washburn needing nine more to more into the top 10.
•        Senior setter Natalie Bates is 10th on the all-time assist chart with 1,359 …to move into the top 10 she needs 155 additional assists.
•        Senior libero Alyssa Carney has 1,198 career digs which is 16th all-time at Washburn recording that total in two-plus years …her 5.16 digs per set are second all-time at Washburn trailing Erica Cowhick's 5.51 digs per set from 2004-07.
 
 Hyatt Place Bash at the Beach Series Opponent Records
•        Ferris State
         The Ichabods lead the series 1-0 … the only meeting was a 3-1 win over the Bulldogs on Sept. 7, 2013 at the Ferris State Invitational …the Ichabods were down 1-0 after the first set and then won the next three for the win … Herron is 1-0 against Ferris State.
•        Florida Tech
         Washburn and the Panthers have never met.
•        Embry-Riddle
         The two teams have never met.
•        Palm Beach Atlantic
         Washburn is 2-0 against the Sailfish having picked up a pair of 3-0 sweeps …the Ichabods have not faced the Sailfish since a 3-0 win over PBA on Sept. 1, 2012 … Washburn also swept PBA on Aug. 25, 2007 at the Nova Southeastern Sharks Classic …the Sailfish were the NCAA Division II runner-ups in 2015.
 
 Last time out
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 16-ranked Washburn Ichabods improved to 36-0 all-time in the Washburn Volleyball Invitational presented by the Topeka Capital Plaza Hotel and Convention Center with another pair of sweeps over Mary and Drury. The Ichabods return to action on Friday and Saturday at the Palm Beach Atlantic Tournament.
Leanna Willer was named the tournament most valuable player after averaging 3.92 kills per set and 3.17 digs per set. Sarah Vicory was also named to the all-tournament team leading the event with a .500 hitting percentage connecting on 32 kills with two errors in 60 swings.
#16 Washburn 3, Drury 0 (25-16, 28-26, 25-17)
In the opening set the Ichabods rolled to a 25-16 win after jumping out to an 8-2 lead and the Panthers would not get closer than six the rest of the way as Washburn outhit the Panthers .355 to .100 as Leanna Willer had eight kills in 10 attempts with no errors adding four digs along with Alyssa Carney's four digs in the set.
In the second set, Washburn trailed by 17-8 to the Panthers before the Ichabods rallied to tie the score at 25-25 using a 17-8 run. The Panthers went back in front at 26-25 after a kill by Brooke Antenen and then Washburn tied it back at 26-26 on a kill by Erica Montgomery. A second kill by Montgomery put Washburn up one and a kill by Sarah Vicory clinched the set at 28-26.
Washburn fell behind in the third set 5-3 before taking the lead for good at 7-6 and would use a 11-6 run to maintain the lead and wrap up the weekend with a 4-0 record.
Willer finished with a match-high 16 kills with two errors in 35 attempts adding 11 digs while Kelsey Barrick had 10 kills. Bates dished out 41 assists and had six digs while Carney recorded a match-high 15.
Washburn finished with a .262 hitting percentage while holding the Panthers to a .133 number.

 AVCA National Poll Notes
•        Washburn has been ranked in the AVCA poll 182 times in program history which is 15th all-time in Division II history.
•        The Ichabods' highest ranking was No. 2 on Oct. 18, 2010.
•        Washburn has been ranked in the top 10 112 times, which is ninth all-time among NCAA Division II schools.
•        Under Chris Herron, the Ichabods have been ranked in the top 10 111 times - all but one time in school history have come under Herron's leadership.
 
 MIAA Preseason coaches poll
•        Washburn Volleyball was picked first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, released Thursday, Aug. 11 by the conference office.  Washburn received five first place votes and 110 total points, earning the top nod for the first time since 2012.  Washburn finished the 2015 season at 28-6.
 
 Winning
•        The Ichabods have made a habit out of appearing in the NCAA, reaching that milestone the past 12 years and 13 times under head coach Chris Herron ... additionally, Washburn has won five MIAA Championships under Herron and has its sights set on another in 2015 ... This season, Washburn returns an All-American to the court for the ninth-straight year in Sarah Vicory and Leanna Willer, two of 29 all-time All-Americans at Washburn.
 
 Up next
•        The Ichabods will head to Shawnee, Okla., for the GAC/MIAA Crossover Sept. 16-17. Washburn will take on Southeastern Oklahoma State and Oklahoma Baptist in day one and then wrap up the event with Southwestern Oklahoma State and East Central on Saturday. Washburn will then return home to open MIAA play on Sept. 20 against Emporia State hosting the Hornets in Lee Arena with first serve set for 7 p.m.
