Women's Soccer Suffers Narrow Loss to Top-Ranked UCM

WARRENSBURG, Mo. --The Washburn women's soccer team fell short in its upset bid against No. 1 University of Central Missouri Sunday, losing 2-1.

The Ichabods gave up a season-high 30 shots to one of the most prolific offenses in the nation, but gave up just two goals, tying a season-low for the Jennies.

The Jennies were the first on the board in the ninth minute, when Baylie Edwards was awarded a penalty kick and scored on Washburn keeper Kaitlin Minnich. The score remained at 1-0 until halftime.

Just 2:32 after the start of the second half, Emily Stauffer scored for the Ichabods to tie it up at 1-1. In scoring a goal, the Ichabods did what only Emporia State University has done all season, which is score on UCM goalkeeper Ana Dilkes. The tie did not last but seven minutes, as Mikala Modiri scored her third goal of the season to put the Jennies back up 2-1.

The Ichabods were able to get off just one more shot attempt in the rest of the match, as Jasmine Palmer sent a shot wide left in the 64th minute.

After the loss, the Ichabods possess an 8-5-1 record, 4-3-0 in the MIAA. The Jennies remain undefeated at 14-0-0, 7-0-0 in conference play. The Ichabods will head home for the first time in almost three weeks when they take on 11-2-0 Missouri Western State University Friday. The match will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Yager Stadium.
