TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- The Washburn women's soccer team will advance to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament after defeating Northeastern State 1-0 Wednesday.
Paige Swanson scored the game's only goal early in the second half to give the Ichabods a lead they would not relinquish, and was the first successful shot attempt after eight prior shots were taken by Washburn.
The Ichabods held a 12-9 shot advantage for the match, and had nine shots on goal compared to the RiverHawks' three.
Kaitlin Minnich posted her seventh shutout of the season, being named to the All-MIAA third-team earlier in the day. Two other third-team selections,
Tera Lynch and
Rebecca Weimer, each had solid outings as well, as Weimer played all 90 minutes in a standout defensive team performance and Lynch had three shots, including two on goal.
Swanson's goal was her fifth of the season, tying her with
Ellie Karloff for most on the team.
At 10-8-1, the Ichabods will go on to face Missouri Western State University at 7 p.m. Friday, in Warrensburg, Missouri. The Griffons defeated the University of Central Oklahoma 2-1 Wednesday. In the two teams first meeting on Oct. 20, the Griffons defeated the Ichabods 1-0 at Yager Stadium. The winner of Friday's match will go on to face the winner of the match between the University of Central Missouri and Fort Hays State University.
