SPRINGFIELD, Mo. --- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team dropped its series opener to Drury on Friday, 3-2, to end a four-game win streak and slide its overall record to 6-2.
With each side scoreless the Ichabods found themselves on the board first with runs from
Curtis Whitten and
Riley Krane coming during the third. Whitten reached base on a two-out walk before Krane drove him home with a triple down the right field line to extend his runs batted-in streak to eight games.
Krane then had to wait just one batter to come home as
Josh Crosby followed Krane's lead and roped a double to left allowing Krane to comfortable score to make it 2-0.
Drury responded in the bottom half of the inning by pushing Caleb Essick across thanks to a sacrifie fly from Sam Benes to trim the lead to 2-1.
Washburn collected a hit from
Bowe Behymer in the fourth but was unable to get him to bring him home. Drury capitalized on the missed opportunity by scoring twice in its half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Panthers' pitching staff then took over allowing WU to reach base only once during the final five innings.
After working 5.2 innings surrendering seven hits, three runs with one earned
Nick Silva was dealt the loss. In his appearance Silva faced 25 batters, striking out six with zero walks.
Jaren Kutzke meanwhile made a 2.1 inning relief appearance allowing one hit, no runs with three strikeouts.
The Ichabods will try to bounce back Saturday as they face Drury in a doubleheader starting at noon.
