Baseball grinds out doubleheader sweep over Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. --- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team improved to 8-2 on the season after sweeping its doubleheader against Drury (1-2) on Saturday at the US Baseball Park in Springfield, Missouri. The series concludes tomorrow with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
 
Game 1: Washburn 5, Drury 3 (7 INN)
With the bases loaded in the third, Bowe Behymer drove home the first run of the day as JB Eary was pushed across. Riley Krane then collected his second home run of the season with a two-run shot to right field to make it 3-0.
 
The WU lead was short-lived however as Drury retaliated in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of its own to tie the opening game at 3-3.
 
After scoring twice in the fourth, the Ichabods continued to extend their lead to 7-3 thanks to a two-run fifth. Drury trimmed the margin to 7-5 in the home half of the fifth.
 
Game 2: Washburn 8, Drury 3
Washburn working quietly in the second game of the day as it registered five runs in the first. A single from Crosby to right accounted for his first of three RBI for the game as Gardner crossed home. Krane then made it 2-0 as he stole home. After a run from Crosby, Kasey Clark capped the outburst with a two-run RBI that allowed Triggs and Nickle to make it 5-0.
 
Drury responded in the second by trimming the lead to 5-3.
 
The Ichabods added two runs in the fifth before the Panthers tacked one to their total to make it 7-4. Washburn then took a four-run lead in the seventh as Triggs tallied his __ RBI of the contest as Nickle raced in from second to make it 8-4.
 
After missing an opportunity to capitalize with the bases loaded in the seventh, the Panthers were able to again the load them up in the eighth, but were limited to just one run to make it 8-5. Drury had its third bases loaded chance in the ninth but stout pitcher from Marcus McKinney left the Panthers empty handed.
 
Lance Barkley was credited with the game one win, while Jacob Head earned the victory in game two. McKinney finished the day with two saves. Barkley tossed five innings, conceding seven hits, five runs with two walks and five strikeouts. Head scattered three earned runs on hits through 6.1 innings while walking three and striking out six.
 
Clark and Triggs lead the Ichabods on the day with three RBI each. Krane's consecutive RBI streak ended at nine games after coming up empty during game two.
