Baseball falls to Griffons in extra innings

TOPEKA, Kan. --- The Washburn baseball team was dealt a tough loss on Monday in its series finale as Missouri Western escaped 6-3 in 12 innings.

WU starter Jacob Head conceded one run while scattering five runs and three strikeouts in his eight innings but received a no decision. The loss went to Maustin Otterstatter who surrendered three runs on five hits in three innings of work. Marcus McKinney made a one inning relief appearance, though missed save opportunity as he allowed the tying two runs in the ninth.

Darian Abram went 3-for-5 on day with one run while Riley Krane scored twice and reached base with a hit and a walk. A double for Josh Crosby was good for one of his two hits as he also drove home two. Brett Nickle also picked up an RBI thanks to a sacrifice fly.

After plating one in the first to take a 1-0 lead, Washburn (8-6, 0-3 MIAA) pushed two across in the third for a 3-0 advantage.

Missouri Western (6-7, 3-0 MIAA) rallied in the ninth to tie the game at 3-3 before capitalizing on a pair of fielding errors to take a 6-3 lead in the 12th.

During the final three innings Washburn struggled at the plate reaching base only once.

The Ichabods will return to action at Falley Field this weekend with a three-game set against Northeastern State.
