Ninth inning rally falls short as Baseball drops series finale

TOPEKA, Kan. --- A late ninth inning rally was not enough for the Washburn Ichabods who dropped its series finale Sunday to Pittsburg State, 5-4, sliding to 14-9 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

Following a five-run fifth by the Gorillas, Washburn found itself trailing 5-2 as it headed into the ninth. With two outs and two runners on, Gabe Franklin drove in Darian Abram to trim the lead and move Bowe Behymer to third. Tanner Triggs then pushed Behymer across in what proved to be the final tally of the afternoon.

The previous two runs for the Ichabods came in the first with Behymer scoring on a throwing error before Riley Krane was driven in by Franklin.

WU maintain its advantage until Pittsburg State's big fifth inning.

Nickle, Franklin, Triggs and Behymer finished with two hits each while Abram, Logan Twehous and Zach Macke followed with one apiece. Triggs, Franklin, Behymer and Abram also each drew walks on the day.

The loss was credited to Jacob Head (4-1) as he pitched 4.1 innings with five runs on six hits. Reliever Maustin Otterstatter worked 3.2 scoreless innings struck out three and allowed one hit in 13 batters faced before Zach Linquist tossed the final inning.

The Ichabods will return to action on Tuesday, March 21 when they travel to take on Fort Hays in a single-game
