TOPEKA, Kan. --- The Washburn women's tennis team dropped a close, 5-3, match to Central Oklahoma Wednesday afternoon at the Topeka Country Club.
Washburn built an early 2-1 cushion after securing two of three doubles points. No. 7
Madeline Hill and
Jacqueline Engelbrecht beat a pair of UCO netters 8-2.
Logan Morrissey and
MaKenna Gonzales paired up for a thrilling 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles. Emilie Semo and Jenny Bond of Central Oklahoma defeated Ichabod netters
Ally Burr and
Madison Lysaught 8-4 at the three spot.
With a one-point advantage the Ichabods headed into singles play where Central Oklahoma notched a pair of wins at No. 3 and No.2 singles to take a lead midway into the contest. Alix Williams handed Morrissey a loss in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.
Engelbrecht was defeated in three at No. 2 doubles in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 decision.
Hill notched her 29
th win of the season to tie the single-season record for singles wins after defeating Alli Hodges 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 to tie the match at three-all.
Gonzales was ousted at No. 4 singles in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 allowing the Bronchos to jump in front 4-3.
Jenny Bond defeated Burr at No. 6 singles in straight set 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Bronchos
Lysaught was leading 3-2 in the third set after splitting the first two 1-6, 6-4 at No. 5 singles before her match was called.
Washburn will play its third match in four days when it matches up with MIAA opponent No. 20 Northeastern State on Friday at 3 p.m.
