Ichabods Slide Past Bearcats in Conference Opener

MARYVILLE, Mo. --- The Washburn women's tennis team opened its conference slate with a 5-4 win on the road against Northwest Missouri State at the Frank Grube tennis courts Wednesday afternoon in Maryville, Mo..

The Ichabods got out to an early lead winning two of three doubles points. Ally Burr and Madison Lysaught dropped their match at No. 3 doubles 8-2 to Tess Loving and Margaux Jacquet.  12th-ranked doubles duo Madeline Hill and Jacqueline Engelbrecht cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Lorena Rivas and Luiza Souza. Logan Morrissey and MaKenna Gonzales defeated Tania Teruel and Aniek Kolen 8-1.

With a 2-1 lead in hand the Ichabods headed into singles play. Hill picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Rivas to put Washburn up 3-1.

Burr defeated Jacquet in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 before Gonzales fell in two to Irene Nunez 6-1, 6-4..

Engelbrecht picked up a three set win over Teruel 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Souza would tie the match before veteran Ichabod Logan Morrissey would pull through with a three set 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Bearcat netter Aniek Kolen to clinch the match 5-4 for Washburn.

Washburn improved to 6-2 on the season and will head to Missouri Western to match up with the Griffons on March 12.
