KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Washburn women's tennis team closed out its 2016-17 regular season on a high note with a 6-3 win over Rockhurst Thursday afternoon.
Washburn rode its momentum from yesterday afternoon into the match, gaining an early 2-1 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
Madeline Hill and
Jacqueline Engelbrecht racked up their 26
th win at No. 1 doubles in an 8-5 decision.
Madison Lysaught and
MaKenna Gonzales showed little mercy in an 8-0 defeat of a pair of Rockhurst netters at No. 3 doubles.
Logan Morrissey and
Ally Burr were handed a tough loss at No. 2 doubles 9-8 (7-4).
With two wins in its arsenal Washburn headed into singles action where Hill continued her dominance at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Morrissey continued the Ichabods winning ways at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Engelbrecht put it all together in a three set win at No. 2 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to clinch the match for Washburn.
Gonzales was defeated in straight sets at No. 4 singles 6-0, 7-5 before Burr dropped No. 6 singles in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
???????Lysaught closed out the Ichabods final regular-season outing on a high note with a thrilling 6-7, 6-1, 10-8 win at No. 5 singles.
The Ichabods close out the regular-season on a four-match win streak sitting at 12-7 overall. Washburn will return to action on April 18 when its heads into the 2017 MIAA Tournament as a six-seed where it will face third-seed Central Oklahoma in its opening match slated for 6 p.m. at the Dillon Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska.
