TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn women's soccer team started the Davy Philips era with a victory Thursday, defeating Upper Iowa University 2-0.
Emily Stauffer scored a goal for the Ichabods and added an assist in a two-goal second half for Washburn.
The Ichabods held the Peacocks without a shot on goal and just two shots total in the first half, but were unable to get on the board themselves, as the first half ended 0-0.
Kelsi Smith had the lone first-half shot on goal for the Ichabods in the 41st minute, saved by Upper Iowa goalkeeper Calia Petrie.
The Ichabods held the offensive advantage throughout the first half, with three shots compared to the Peacocks' two, and had five corner kicks to Upper Iowa's zero.
Upper Iowa had an aggressive start to the second half with a shot on goal in the 48
th minute, but it was saved by
Kaitlin Minnich. Less than five minutes later, Stauffer gathered the ball in a scramble inside the 18 yard box to score the first goal of the Ichabods' season.
Upper Iowa got just two more shots off after the first goal scored by Washburn, both going wide.
Paige Swanson added a goal in the 89th minute to seal the game for the Ichabods, part of a prolific second half that saw nine shots by Washburn.
The Ichabods will remain at home to take on Southwest Minnesota State University at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Mustangs started 2017 with a 6-0 loss to Fort Hays State University Thursday at Yager Stadium.
