TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn women's soccer team finished off its opening weekend undefeated after taking down Southwest Minnesota State University 2-0 Saturday.
The Ichabods were led by two goals from Ellie Karloff, both assisted by Tera Lynch.
Washburn struck early, with Karloff scoring her first goal of the season in the 14th minute to take a 1-0 lead over the Mustangs.
Washburn saw a lot of action around the goal in the first half, taking eight total shots, three on goal. SMSU was held to just two shots in the half, one in the 11th minute that was saved by goalkeeper Kaitlin Minnich, and another in the 22nd minute that sailed high.
The Ichabod defense held the Mustangs to just six shots total for the game, as Washburn held on to the one-goal lead until the 87th minute, where Karloff once again received a pass from Lynch to go up 2-0.
The Mustangs followed up Karloff's second goal with two shots on goal, both saved by Minnich in the final three minutes of the game. Minnich finished the game with four saves, and recorded her second consecutive shutout to start 2017.
For Karloff, this was the first multi-goal game for the junior forward in her career.
The Ichabods have avenged 2016 losses to both Upper Iowa University and SMSU, and are off to their first 2-0 start since 2006.
The Ichabods will take to the road for the first time this season when they take on Northwestern Oklahoma State University Thursday. The Rangers are 0-1-0 in 2017 after losing to Rogers State University 3-0.
