Women's soccer suffers first loss against Newman University

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday, falling 4-1 to Newman University.

The Ichabods fell behind in the 13th minute on a goal by the Jets' Rosa Urista-Chico, her second goal of the season.

The Jets then scored two goals within 17 seconds of one another, one by Grace Linton in the 22nd minute, then another by Colleen Howland in the 23rd.

Down 3-0 in the first half, the Ichabods were able to cut the lead to 3-1 before halftime when freshman Haley Schroeder scored her first goal as an Ichabod off of an assist by Paige Ledesma.

At the end of the first half, the Jets outshot the 'Bods 10-4, and had two corner kicks to Washburn's one. WU also suffered from committing 11 fouls, a season-high for a half.

Newman surged into the second half with a goal just five minutes in, Howland's second of the game off of a corner kick assist by Emma Steward. From there, the Ichabods were unable to muster much offense, shooting just three times, two of them on goal.

The Ichabods will be back home at 6 P.M. Friday, when they open up the conference portion of the schedule against Emporia State University. The Hornets are 3-1-0 on the season after losing their first game Saturday 1-0 against Augustana University. This week's games against Emporia State and the University of Nebraska at Kearney will not count towards the Ichabods' conference standings.
