TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn soccer team suffered its' second consecutive loss Friday as the Ichabods fell to Emporia State University 2-1.
The Hornets scored two first half goals to set themselves ahead of the Ichabods by the 25th minute. The Ichabods managed just one shot on goal in the first half with 12 seconds to go, which was saved by Hornets' goalkeeper Bethany Reeves.
The first Hornet goal came off of a bizarre play in which the ball careened off the post, resulting in a scramble that squeaked by Washburn goalkeeper
Kaitlin Minnich in the 17th minute.
Just seven minutes later, the Hornets came back on a breakaway, where Ashlynn Summar shot right into Minnich and the rebound came straight back to Summar, who scored on her second attempt.
The match went into halftime 2-0, where it remained until the 82nd minute, when the Ichabods were finally able to get on the board with a breakaway goal of her own. With her second goal of the season, Swanson is now tied for the team lead in goals with
Ellie Karloff, and in points with Karloff and
Tera Lynch.
The Ichabods were unable to get another shot off in the final 8:43 of the match, falling to 2-2-1 on the season.
The Ichabods will try to rebound at 2 p.m. Sunday, when they host The University of Nebraska at Kearney. The Lopers took down Fort Hays State University 1-0 in overtime Thursday, improving their record to 3-1-1.
